The
wife of Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, Nkechi, has built a 152
two-bedroom bungalows, furnished and handed over to indigent widows from
637 communities in the state.
She said the scheme, which came under her ‘She Needs A Roof Project’ was aimed at putting smiles on the faces of poor widows.
Mrs. Okorocha, said in an interactive
session with newsmen in her office, that the beneficiaries were chosen
after an assessment visit to their various communities to ascertain
those afflicted with hardship and poverty.
She said, “We have 152 indigent widows
who have benefited from the SNARP, but there are still very many
indigent ones out there apart from these beneficiaries. She added that
each of the bungalows cost between N3m to N3.5m.
To guard against possible hijack of the
project, she said a verification research team made up of men of honour
and credibility had been set up to ascertain those really in need of the
houses.
Apart from SNARP, Mrs. Okorocha said
there was also a leadership programme, where students and pupils of
secondary and primary schools would be counselled and groomed for future
leadership roles.
One of the beneficiaries of the houses,
Mrs. Edna Okonkwo, told our correspondent that she was sleeping in a
cockroach, spider, snake and centipede infested house that was also
leaking, before she got the new house.
