Former
Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has criticised Premier League clubs for
spending too much in the transfer market and insisted that they are not
purchasing wisely, Goal reports.
Lehmann, who spent five years at the
Gunners, including an appearance in the 2006 Champions League final cut
short by a red card, has commented on the way that English clubs are
run, and pointed out that there are few ex-professionals involved in
boardroom matters.

But it is the spending of Premier League clubs that the 45-year-old is most concerned with.
“English teams pay too high prices for
players, to the benefit of other leagues,” the former Stuttgart and AC
Milan goalkeeper told Spox.
“A new player costs €20 or €40m? The other leagues take the money gratefully, knowing it’s far too much.
“That’s complete nonsense. You can’t say that they are shopping cleverly.”
Lehmann also turned his attention to the
personnel directing matters at boardroom level in the Premier League. He
suggested that there is a need for those who have played the game at a
high level and linked the problem to English clubs’ poor performance in
recent Champions League campaigns.
“Almost the whole of football (in England) is managed by people who have never played at a high level,” he added.
“And (English) club football is a big
disappointment internationally, if you see that four teams started in
the Champions League last season and not a single team reached the
quarter-finals. Sooner or later they will need a reshuffle.”
Lehmann, meanwhile, also commented on
Jurgen Klopp, who has recently been linked with both Liverpool and
Borussia Monchengladbach, and said that the former Borussia Dortmund
boss could blaze a trail for German coaches abroad.
